BELAPUR: In the wake of the recent attack on a young female photojournalist in Mumbai, the need for women to become self-reliant and ward off any attacks on them has been greatly felt. The Navi Mumbai wing of the Aam Aadmi Party arranged a self-defense workshop in the city that was attended by around 25 women. The female participants picked up various techniques of self-protection from martial art exponent Martial Vout from Belgium.

The two-hour training programme focused mainly on self-defense techniques and by the time the sessions wound up, most participants seemed visibly confident of tackling any untoward situation in the city. "Such a workshop is very much needed. Women should understand and learn self-defense to help save themselves from falling prey in an unpleasant incident," said 21-year-old Disha Gosar, a law student from D Y Patil University.
When asked about the need to face such situations boldly, expert Vout said, "Strength should come from within irrespective of your body frame. You should be strong enough and ensure the assailant doesn't overpower you."
